Multi-stakeholder collaboration for climate action in school environments

The city of Madrid suffers notable impacts related to climate change, affecting the health, economy, well-being and social equity of its inhabitants, especially in the districts most exposed to economic and social vulnerability. Several strategies to address this challenge are being designed and implemented in the city with a systemic, multi-stakeholder, adaptive and social cohesion approach. One of these strategies places schools and their environments as the epicentre of urban transformation, connecting with their neighbourhoods and thus enhancing their adaptive capacity and resilience.

This article presents the work of the Educational Programme for Climate Action “Ecología a pie de Barrio’’ (EapdB), a European project promoted by the EIT Climate-KIC and implemented in the districts of Usera and Villaverde. Through the case study, the potential of climate action education programmes as a vehicle for reflection and action towards the sustainable transformation of cities; the role of education in activating and facilitating multi-stakeholder collaboration using the Quintuple Helix Innovation Model (QHIM), and as an element in reversing social inequalities, is presented.
